Preparations for Ceramic Art London, March
2007 - Making Sequence
10
Jan 07
I was given this beautiful lacquer lid by Doug Jones (of Floating Earth
and Art in Clay fame) a few years ago, and I have been trying to make
a jar to suit it ever since without much success.

Today I threw this large piece then cut facets with a cheese wire...

31st Jan 07
The jar has stiffened enough to make the gallery. A ring of clay is thrown
on another wheel, and placed on the rim of the jar.....

This is then thrown again, to form the rim...and the bottom edge is cut,
to begin to form the lower edge which echoes the freedom of the facets...

The next stage is to wait for the piece to dry to leather hard and trim
the bottom. I expect to be posting more images in a few days.

Trimming and the addition of an coil to give a foot - I want the piece
to appear to float and to give more space for the glaze to flow. I intend
to use a rather fluid 'Chun' glaze.

to appear to float and to give more space for the glaze to flow. I intend
to use a rather fluid 'Chun' glaze, we'll have to see what happens when
it's fired.

22nd Feb
In the biscuit kiln.... and then, glazed and ready to go into the kiln
again for a glaze firing up to 1310C. It will be coming out in a couple
of days. I'll post the final picture of the piece soon.

Please wish it luck! and send feedback about this new page on my website

It came out of the kiln very well - the most amazing thing was the lid
fitted perfectly. It's extremely hard to do this as porcelain shrinks
15% so to calculate the shrikage this well was a bit of a fluke. Pictures
below: the chun glaze has poured down the sides and created a deep blue
line where is finishes - very satisfying. Feedback what you think
of the piece here...
(PS: 28th Feb - the jar has sold already, and sadly it
won't now be coming with me to CAL.....hope the photos are an OK substitute
for seeing the real thing at CAL.)
